Throughout today students from all year groups are taking part in the Doncaster Youth Council elections. The vote is a way for young people to put into practice the knowledge they have gained of the democratic system, by electing candidates from their own school, who will then represent them at the local Youth Council meetings. The Youth Councillors will take the views and opinions from their area’s young people, and present them to local authority decision makers, who will in turn use that information to set priorities.
Students have a choice of three candidates from Ash Hill Academy on the ballot paper this time. The final count and announcements of successful Youth Councillors will come at a later date, as the ballot papers are taken in by Doncaster Council Electoral Services, who make sure that the election is carried out in a fair manner.
