Academy Closure Update

22nd May 2020

Dear Parents/Carers,

Academy Closure Update

Over the past two weeks, the Government has made some key announcements around the potential wider opening of schools and some possible timescales for this. We are keen to provide as much information as possible, as soon as possible, to help students, parents and carers plan for the weeks and months ahead.

Any wider opening of schools, beyond the provision of emergency childcare to the children of key workers and vulnerable pupils, is dependent upon Government confirmation that:

  •  The five key tests are met
  •  The rate of infection continues to decrease.

If these criteria are met and if it is feasible for schools to extend their provision (following a risk assessment of individual schools), schools may begin to consider opening more widely. We are therefore currently undertaking a risk assessment process for our school.

The next stage will be the development of school specific proposals, which we will share with our pupils, staff, parents and carers. We are looking forward to welcoming more students back to school but want to make sure we have thought carefully about how and when we do this. This will not be on June 1st. This will allow us to put the appropriate measures in place and to consider the Government planning guidance for secondary schools, which we expect to receive next week.

We hope that following this process, we will have places other than those available for key workers and vulnerable pupils and we will look to plan a safe and phased approach to bringing Year 10 back into our school. At this stage, we envisage that this will be in small groups, for face-to-face support. If your child is in this year group, we will be in contact with you to provide further details, once our processes are complete.

I would like to stress, that we continue to operate our childcare provision for those of you who are government identified key workers and for vulnerable children. We also enjoy celebrating examples of the great home learning being completed by your children during this period through our Lockdown Competition. Please encourage your child to continue to complete their work, in accordance with the published lesson plans and materials and we will do our very best to share many more great examples of our students’ resourcefulness, creativity and excellence with you on our website and Twitter feed @AshHillAcademy.

We are mindful that by September, all our students will have missed 5 months of formal education and we are resolute in our ambition to support and supplement the work students have been completing as part of their current home learning.

All students, in all year groups, will receive an assessment pack that should be completed and returned to the academy. It is important for their future success, that we look at their recently completed assessments, which will provide an overview of where they are and then lead to a bespoke package of work, both to support their immediate learning and as a bridge into the autumn term.

I would like to thank you for all your support in home schooling your children; we all know this is no easy task, especially amid a world of distractions. I would also like to thank all of those who have taken the time to contact us to thank school for the work we have provided and the provision we have put in place. Your support is warmly appreciated by everyone at school.

Yours faithfully,

John Higgins

Principal
