Ash Hill students are brilliant!

Earlier this year, seven Year 10 students became members of Ash Hill Academy's first ever 'Brilliant Club'.  This is a really exciting project which gives students a taste of what it is like to be a university student and and will allow new doors to be opened when the time comes to apply for university places. The students Olivia Bell, Trafford Sears, Abigail Boid, Kaley Clark, Kayla Martin, Jake Mason and Jayden Robinson have been involved with Karla Drew, a PhD student from Sheffield University, who has been coming into school and teaching the students how to write a dissertation. Each of the students had to write a final dissertation of 2000 words on the subject of ‘The Psychology of sport science’, which was Karla’s specialism.  Each of the students successfully wrote a final piece which was marked and graded and gave the students the opportunity of graduating.

For the graduation ceremony, we invited all students with parents, grandparents, sisters and friends to come into school for an afternoon tea ahead of us all travelling by coach to the ceremony in Sheffield University's Diamond Building (which cost £81 million pounds to complete in 2015).

As a school, we could not be prouder of the time and effort our students have put into this extra work and we especially thank Karla Drew who voluntarily gave up he time on eight evenings to come and teach the students about Sports Psychology and how dissertations are written.

Karla could not be with us for the evening in Sheffield but she sent a speech which was read out at the event. Here are a few  of highlights in her speech was

“This was my first Brilliant club and I could not have wished for a better school to work with”

“What an incredibly enthusiastic, hardworking and bright group of students”

“What made the placement so special was the group of young people I had the privilege of working with”

All the family members had a lovely evening watching the student receive their certificates and experiencing wearing the traditional ‘Mortar boards’ which are unique to graduation. Plenty of embarrassing photos to save for future years!!!

Well done everyone!!
