Teaching and Learning
Students have access to a wide range of specialist teaching, in purpose built accommodation, in order for them to fulfil their potential. Teachers have high expectations of the students' work, encouraging them to work to the best of their ability. All teachers follow the basic principles known as The DN7 and this is embedded across all lessons. (A copy of The DN7 can accessed at the bottom of this page).
Within the academy we have a team of colleagues dedicated to delivering professional development opportunities to all staff ensuring that the teaching practice within the Academy is at the forefront of new teaching initiatives.
At Ash Hill Academy we believe in using evidence based teaching methods to ensure our students have the best life chances both academically and in the world of employment. Fundamental to their success is the ability to work collaboratively which is why we have adopted the use of collaborative learning as a foundation to our lessons. Research has shown that all groups of learners make greater progress when working in collaboration as opposed to traditional styles of delivery.
At Ash Hill Academy we have worked hard to ensure that our teachers have access to the best professional training opportunities available. (Our CPD programme can be accessed at the bottom of this page). The development of a wide range of resources to support teachers in relation to literacy, assessment for learning, teaching and learning styles, and Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural Education has meant that lessons are delivered in an exciting and interesting way.
The investment in teaching within the academy has established high expectations of our staff, and this is leading to improved examination performance in all subjects, increasing success rates for our students.
At Ash Hill Academy CPD for staff is a high priority in order to recruit and retain outstanding staff. CPD is linked directly to the school development plan and performance management targets. Staff at all stages of their career are able to access high quality CPD which has a positive impact on the outcomes of the young people that we teach.
Student Teachers: ITT/NQT
At Ash Hill Academy we are pleased to work in partnership with Delta Academies Trust Teaching School Alliance and Sheffield Hallam University for Initial Teacher Training. At present Ash Hill Academy has a number of schools direct trainees as well as PGCE and BSC teacher training trainees.
Our NQT/ITT training programme is robust and supportive to ensure our trainees are given every opportunity to become outstanding practioners. This programme involves co-ordinated opportunities for NQTs and ITT’s, as well as new staff to the academy, to observe outstanding practice across the academy, as well as in depth training sessions that are tailor made for our trainees.
