Year 8 Options Process

March 2021

Options Process for Year 8 Students

Dear Parent/Carer,

As you may already be aware, your child will soon be asked to select some of the subjects that they will study in Key Stage 4.  All Year 8 students are about to begin a number of activities that have been designed to prepare them to make these choices.

Options Assembly

On Thursday, I will be introducing the options process to students, explaining which subjects are on offer, things to consider when they are choosing their subjects, and exactly what they need to do throughout each stage of the process.

Options Information Sessions

During the week following the assembly, each of their teachers will discuss what their subject will entail in Key Stage 4, and this will be a great opportunity for students to ask questions.

Options Information Videos

As we are unable to host our usual Options Information Evening in the Academy, we will try to provide as much information and guidance for parents and carers as possible. Towards the end of this week, we will place video versions of the subject information sessions onto the Academy website, as well as our online options booklet which will provide lots of other information designed to help students to choose their options.  I will contact you again once these resources are live.

Parents’ Evening – Tuesday 16th March 3pm - 7pm

You should have already received information about our Parents’ Evening on Tuesday 16th March; lots of appointments have already been made.  As well as finding out about your child’s progress, this evening is a great opportunity to discuss Key Stage 4 subjects with teachers.

Helen Green, our Careers Adviser, and I will also be available for appointments during the evening.

If you did not receive the Parents’ Evening letter, it can be found on our website here.

Options Selection Process

Once students have received all of this information, we will be asking them to select their options choices by Tuesday 23rd March.  These will be selected online and detailed instructions regarding this process will be contained in the online options booklet.

This is a very exciting time in your child’s education, and I look forward to working with our students to help them to guide them through this process.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns with the process.

Yours Faithfully,

N. Cairns
